Violence against women

Violence, whether in the home or elsewhere, physical or psychological, is something that can happen to any woman, regardless of her age, ethnicity or wealth. Violence against women is a serious, widespread problem in our society and WIRE frequently assists women who have experienced violence. Women who contact WIRE commonly talk about domestic violence, sexual assault and/or child abuse. Under each heading in this section information and links to other organisations can be found. The first entry is a rural woman.s experience of domestic violence.

  • The Domestic Violence and Incest Resource Centre - The Domestic Violence and Incest Resource Centre (DVIRC) is funded by the Department of Human Services Victoria, Australia. It is a statewide resource centre for information about domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse - The Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse is a national resource on issues of domestic violence and family violence. It provides a central point for the collection and dissemination of Australian domestic and family violence policy, practice and research
  • Women's Domestic Violence Crisis Service of Victoria - Statewide confidential crisis response and support telephone service. They aim to promote women and children's rights to live as full members of society and to live free from harm. Respond to the needs of women and children in crisis who are experiencing or escaping from domestic violence. 24 hrs Crisis Service: 03 - 9373 0123, 1800 015 188 for rural women.
    A special service for women from non-English speaking backgrounds is provided by The Immigrant Women's Domestic Violence Service Victoria Inc. Telephone: 03 - 9898 3145
  • Child Protection Crisis Line - Telephone: 13 1278 . This crisis line is a 24 hour telephone service providing assistance and support in the area of child abuse prevention for people in Victoria.
  • Kids Help Line - A National 24 Hour Telephone Counselling Service for Children and Young People in Australia. Telephone: 1800 55 1800
  • The National Child Protection Clearinghouse - The aim of the clearing house is to inform policy, practice and research into child abuse prevention.
  • CASA House - Centre against Sexual Assault - CASA's Crisis Care service provides counselling, support, information and advocacy in related to medical and legal options to all adult victim/survivors of sexual assault. This is a 24-hour service. Crisis Line: 03 9344 2210. After Hours Counselling Lines: 03 9349 1766, rural Victoria: 1800 806 392. There are 16 CASA's in Victoria.
  • Survivors on Net-Australia - A comprehensive site for survivors of child abuse (the Australian site is not available at the moment but the English one may be useful)
  • The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women Australia - The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) Australia is part of CATW International. CATW is a feminist human rights nongovernmental organisation that works internationally and nationally to oppose all forms of sexual exploitation. CATW has Category II Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
